Settings range from hospital wards, theatres and maternity units to the community, schools and disability services. Many posts are rostered over days, nights and weekends, often on long-day shifts, while community and school posts are more often weekday-based. Nurses and midwives must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) to practise in Ireland, usually in the division of the register that matches the post, such as general, children's, psychiatric, intellectual disability or midwifery. Garda vetting is usually required.
