Residential and respite services generally run around the clock, so rosters often include evenings, weekends and sleepovers. Since 1 December 2025, social care worker has been a protected title in Ireland that can generally only be used by people registered with CORU, and new registrants need a CORU-approved social care qualification or an equivalent that CORU accepts. Garda vetting is required by law for this work, and a full driving licence is often requested.
