The Political Correspondent will provide quality, agenda-setting journalism for the Irish Independent, Sunday Independent and independent.ie.
The ideal candidate(s) will have a strong track record in breaking stories and have extensive contact books. He/she will also be an excellent writer who can analyse stories and write off-diary features as required.
The role demands an ability to call a story, identify underlying themes and to explain complex political developments succinctly and accessibly for both a print and online audience. Original journalism is the key to this role.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES (Overview)
Create up-to-date, accurate, balanced and engaging multimedia political journalism
Consistently break major political stories and write agenda-setting and informative analysis
Represent the organisation externally
To be able to write analysis articles on complex issues in a concise and informative way
Covering breaking news and keeping stories updated across all print and digital platforms
Engaging INM’s online audience
Interviewing people in a wide range of different circumstances and situations
Building a strong network of contacts to maintain a flow of news ranging from political figures to the general public
Collaborating with news editors, other reporters, the visuals desk and production journalists
Planning and advising the Political Editor and news desks of relevant upcoming events and potential angles on stories
Take part in podcasts as required in an effective manner
Carry out your duties at all times in accordance with INM’s Editorial Code of Practice and relevant professional and legal codes
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS (Minimum Experience & Essential Knowledge)
At least five years’ experience as a journalist and at least two years’ experience as a politics reporter or correspondent, with demonstrable excellence in the area of political reporting and commentary and an outstanding grasp of Irish and global politics.
Social media and other digital tools to source news information – and to promote INM’s journalism
Ability to work collaboratively with other staff
Ability to represent the titles in a positive manner on broadcast media and at external events as necessary

Ability to manage space and story demands
